The story of this song is amazing! The song 'Strange Fruit' was written by Abel Meeropol, after he saw a photo of a southern lynching. With great skill and sensitivity, Meeropol describes the 'fruits' of a typical southern lynching, without ever mentioning the word or even the deed itself. On a historical note, Abel and his wife took in the children of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg after their execution for treason. Abel was hounded by the government for his communist beliefs, and the controversial nature of the song he wrote. His ill treatment by the government unfortunately represents one of our country's worst times....McCarthyism. During McCarthyism, many citizens who believed in communism or socialism were persecuted for their political beliefs. This persecution was particularly evident in the entertainment industry. The term McCarthyism is now synonymous with the term 'witch hunt', a reference to the Salem witch trials of early American history.
